Just after my last update the sitting parent took a stretch break and I saw that there are now three baby's. It is getting to be a very busy nest.
Two eggs to go. Good luck to our wee ones!

Follow the lives of a nesting pair of Great Blue Herons 80 feet above the Northwest Coast British Columbia community of Prince Rupert. This student research project will contribute data to explain the decline in the Blue Heron population. The student researchers are enrolled in the Applied Coastal Ecology (ACE)program at Northwest Community College www.nwcc.bc.ca. Thanks to our sponsors you can see the Blue Heron family on our NestCam at http://www.nwcc.bc.ca/BlueHeron/Index.cfm
I am watching your blue heron (creyr glas in the Welsh language) with interest. Thank you for putting the camera online.

Major stress going on at the nest for the past several minutes - sitting parent is standing & calling out and stretching out -as if being attacked. LOTS OF NOISE and the chicks don't appear to be moving. Remaining 2 eggs seem to have a few tiny holes.
ReplyDeleteI wondered about that, too--article link below this site discusses predation by eagles as a speculated reason for the poor nesting success on the coast---I wonder if this nest is being attacked by eagle(s)?
ReplyDeleteAfter at least 2 hours [that I know of] the parent has finally sat down - and become quiet. Thanks to the camera person for the panning and the longshots of the nest surroundings. My untrained eyes didn't see anything untoward - except possibly something cat-like.
ReplyDeleteHi Mac users...
ReplyDeleteHaving problems? Try this:
Go to this site, download and install media player (latest version) then restart Safari browser: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/windowsmediaplayerformacosx.html
If that does not work, try this:
1. Open Windows media player
2. Click File|Open URL and insert this address and see if it works:

I am a Mac user. Used to get the nest with Firefox. Then I couldn't but Safari worked for awhile. Then that went black. I tried Firefox again and it is what I am currently using. I find Firefox overall is better than Safari.
ReplyDeleteI have named the first chick Ned. Any suggestions for the others?
ReplyDeleteHow about Little Blue? How do you know which is which? I can't tell them apart.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like there are only three babies and no eggs now. What happened to the rest of them?
